The Best Christmas Gifts May Not Be the Most Expensive

Many of the traditions of holidays have carried over to our modern practices. Christmas especially, has so many traditions and so many symbols that convey particular meanings. Giving gifts is one of the longest traditions and probably the most practiced. Today, Christmas has become a holiday with store filled with presents and decorations. However, when Christmas first originated, it was not exactly the same.

Giving gifts originated with the birth of the lord; gifts were brought to him by people from all over in celebration. During these simpler times, anything would do. As the story of the The Little Drummer Boy goes, even a song was acceptable. The amazing coming of the Messiah brought so much joy to all people that they gave what they could.

Today, many times, people think that the more expensive a Christmas gifts is the better. The simplicity of putting thought into a gift has sadly been lost over time now that we live in a world that is far more materialistic. Since we are not struggling to survive every day, the gifts can be more extravagant than a song.

However, the most expensive gift is not always the best gift. Thinking about the other person and what would bring joy to them may be more appropriate. A card, a poem or even something homemade can help keep the Christmas spirit alive. Something that comes straight from the heart and has sentimental value could mean more to that person than any mass produced object. Things like, songs, pictures or something that demonstrates love, as they did when Christmas first began, may make for a better gift.

For those who are less fortunate, the spirit of Christmas is actually more evident. For most of these people, a helping hand or even a smile can brighten their holiday. Volunteering at soup kitchens, homeless shelters or hospitals can be the greatest gift of all. Spending time with these people and giving what you can, can mean the world to those who do not have this all the time.

Volunteering and giving to others can be the best gift to yourself. It may be shocking how good you will feel after giving the gift of Christmas spirit and sharing that joy. Bringing family members and friends along is also a great gift to give to them. By allowing them to give some of themselves to those less fortunate, it can help them have a wonderful holiday and perhaps start new traditions.

It is important to remember, especially around Christmas to give to those who do not have as much as we do. Giving Christmas gifts may have originated so many years ago, but the simplicity of what once was can be continued by understanding the true meaning of Christmas, not about expensive items, but about sharing and giving back. The best Christmas gifts are always those which come from the heart.
