You are forgiven if you thought I was referring to Christmas 2007 and Christmas 2008.
What I actually had in mind were my two favourite Christmas songs. My two favourite Christmas songs are, ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham! and ‘This Christmas’ by… I don’t know. That song has been performed by various artistes. There is a version by Destiny’s Child, which I love very much.
About four years ago I walked into a music store along Oxford Street to buy any CD that had ‘This Christmas’ on it. The problem was that I knew the song but I didn’t know the title. It was like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Luckily for me however, since it was very close to Christmas the track came on over the store’s loudspeaker shortly after I entered and I quickly rushed to the till and told the sales assistant, a bit too excitedly, that I wanted to buy the song that was currently being played.
I mean no disrespect, but you see some of these shop assistants are not trained to handle any customer request that is slightly different from they ones they usually handle. When I told her I wanted to buy the CD being played she looked lost at first, she was only used to customers who brought the items they wanted to purchase to her till and paid for them. Before she could understand what I was saying the song had finished playing and I was even making less sense to her. It took the miraculous intervention of another customer who understood my plight to make me walk away with the CD. Phew!
I don’t know why I love those two songs. I don’t think it has anything to do with the similarities in their titles I think I just love them and I’m really looking forward to listening to Christmas songs this Christmas, especially those two.
