The December holidays are a special time to get together with friends and family. They’re also a time of hard work, stress, and anxiety for the hosts! Christmas gift baskets are a wonderful way to celebrate the season, by providing gourmet treats, beauty, and convenience. Fruit-filled holiday gift baskets are perfect for a festive party, entertaining family… or simply relaxing and enjoying a little luxury at home after everyone’s gone home.
While some gift baskets richly reflect Christmas traditions, others work well for Hanukah, Kwanza, Yule, or even New Year’s (and don’t forget your apples with honey for Rosh Hashanah!) Regardless of the holiday you celebrate, there are gourmet gift baskets perfect for the occasion.
What’s more, a basket brimming with gourmet fruit, wine, chocolates, and nuts makes a perfect business gift. Your clients and colleagues are sure to appreciate your consideration as you make their lives a touch sweeter, richer, and healthier. Giving a holiday gift of the highest quality makes a clear statement about the value you place on your working relationship. But why stop there? A fruit of the month membership is a fail-safe way to guarantee their appreciation all year long!
Gifts of fruits, nuts, and sweets have long been a holiday tradition. Oranges, for instance, have a rich history of being part of Santa’s bounty at Christmastime. Once, children celebrated finding a single orange in the toe of their stockings. Today oranges are available everywhere and at every time of year-but the perfect, luscious Christmas orange is still an unbeatable delight.
One of the nice aspects of a well-designed, thoughtfully crafted Christmas gift basket is that, unlike with many presents, nothing goes to waste. All the tantalizing edibles can be consumed–even if sharing is necessary to polish them off! The beautiful box or basket can be used to contain holiday clutter (rather than adding to it), and even the peels of the fruit have their own particular holiday uses.
For instance, the peels of citrus fruits can be used to enhance the fire in your hearth-traditionally lemons and oranges are used for this, but limes, tangerines, and even grapefruit will all work beautifully. You can use your citrus peels as kindling, or toss them in the flames of a fire already in progress. Either way, they will add a lovely, cheerful scent to your holiday atmosphere.
Apple peels also have a special holiday use. You can use an old-fashioned, hand-crank apple peeler to create long, thin strips of apple peel-or, if you’re skilful with a peeler, create them by hand. Hang the strips to dry for one week. (The longer the peel dries, the more brittle it will become. Moisten with water or oil, if necessary.) Use instead of ribbon for gift wrap, or as garland for decorating. Alternate the green peels from a Granny Smith with the dappled red of a Fuji for a particularly Christmas-y display.
Regardless of what you do with the contents of your Christmas gift basket or who you share them with, you can rest assured that your gift will hit the spot. Share the “fruits” of your labor this holiday season, and watch the joy and cheer abound.
