4 Tips to Help You Christmas Shop For Close Relatives

Christmas shopping for close relatives can be a piece of cake, but in some cases it can be a complete nightmare. On one hand shopping for your nearest and dearest can be a great deal of fun; after all these are the people you really care about and know very well. On the other hand, the pressure to choose something they will treasure and enjoy can turn the whole thing into an ordeal. In this article I’ll share some of the issues and how you can overcome them to find that perfect gift for your loved ones.

Issue one – too many gifts to choose from

Many people look forward to buying Christmas gifts for their close relatives. It’s an opportunity to choose a gift that you know they will enjoy and appreciate. If you are one of these people then you probably already have a list of five or six gift ideas that you know they will love. Of course the stressful part is choosing which gift to buy. Which one will they like the most? This is especially true if you have a limited budget and can’t possibly afford to buy everything on the list. If this is the case for you then don’t worry, your loved one will appreciate whichever gift they receive. One way you can overcome this is to select one of the gifts and then pass the list onto another family member so that they can choose a gift from it too. This way the recipient may well receive all of the gifts. I have done this myself in the past.

Issue two – you can’t find the gift

There is nothing worse than thinking up the perfect Christmas gift for your husband or wife and then not being able to find it. You may find yourself on endless shopping trips, always coming back frustrated and empty handed. Becoming obsessed with finding a particular item can take the fun right out of Christmas. If you are in this situation then you need to stop and think. Why can you not find the item? Is it because it probably doesn’t exist? in which case you need to think of something else. If the item is just this year’s hottest gift and it’s sold out then think about making a special gift certificate to give your loved one instead – sort of an IOU for when the item comes back into stock in the New Year.

Issue three – the search for perfection

Not having a Christmas gift list can be just as frustrating, especially if you spend hours traipsing around the stores looking for that perfect gift for your grandma or your sister. The pressure of finding the perfect gift can be so great that you become frustrated and disheartened. Don’t forget that it’s the thought that counts and your loved ones will probably be thrilled at the gifts you have selected; don’t be so hard on yourself.

Issue four – the issue of fairness

Some people become quite worried that their relatives will compare their gifts. while this is unlikely it can cause concern, especially if you choose an expensive gift for one relative but not others. One way to deal with this is to buy the same gift for everyone, such as a digital photo frame or a personalised calendar. This way you can personalise the gift for each recipient. The other option is to set a clear budget and spend the same amount of money on each of your loved ones. Don’t forget though, it’s the thought that counts and people are unlikely to compare their gifts in such a way.

Hopefully these ideas will help make your Christmas shopping less stressful.
